Viral Survival of Sherpa at Mount Everest

In the realm of high-altitude mountaineering, the most famous Sherpa guides embody incredible survival and endurance. A legendary example includes Kami Rita Sherpa, who has made history by scaling Mount Everest dozens of times. Another globally recognized case involves Dawa Sherpa, who survived a miraculous six days stranded high on Everest—crawling back to base camp after being presumed dead.

The viral survival story sweeping global news centers on Dawa Sherpa (also known as Hillary Dawa Sherpa), a 52-year-old veteran Nepali climbing guide. His miraculous rescue has been hailed by the global mountaineering community as "nothing short of a miracle"

The Disappearance

On May 29, 2026, Dawa Sherpa was descending Mount Everest. He was working for a Kathmandu-based company, guiding a Polish climber. They turned back before the summit. Dawa became separated from his client near the Yellow Band. This area sits between Camp 3 and Camp 4, at an extreme altitude of around 7,500 meters (24,600 feet). While his client successfully reached base camp, Dawa disappeared. He later revealed that he had fallen from a ladder into a deep crevasse in the treacherous Khumbu Icefall, surviving on nothing but ice for two days and nights.

Days Alone in the "Death Zone"Dawa survived completely alone on the mountain for six to seven days. He endured some of the harshest environments on Earth with: No food, No supplemental or bottled oxygen, No support or gear

Believing he had tragically perished, the international climbing community posted online tributes. Back home in Nepal, his family had already begun his funeral rites and last prayer rituals.

The Miraculous Discovery

On June 4, 2026, a garbage cleanup team from the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) was dismantling ropes and packing up the route as the climbing season ended. Near Crampon Point at the base of the Khumbu Icefall, they spotted someone slowly crawling and sliding through the snow toward Everest Base Camp. It was Dawa Sherpa.

Medical Status

The SPCC team immediately provided food, water, and emergency support. Dawa was evacuated by a rescue helicopter to HAMS Hospital in Kathmandu. Doctors confirmed that despite severe frostbite on his fingers and intense exhaustion, he is conscious, recognizing his family, and speaking slowly as he recovers. Experts credit his survival to the intense genetic adaptation and lifelong physical conditioning unique to the Sherpa people.
