Tips to stay safe during the upcoming protest! 📢

As someone who has organized & been a part of many protests, here are few things that might be beneficial for you, if you are attending the upcoming protest against the government! 🧵

1. If you’re planning to attend a protest alone or with your friends, make sure you stick with your group or nearby protestors in a small group. Wear comfortable clothes & good shoes. Inform someone at home or a trusted contact where you’re going. And above all, stay alert!

2. I am pretty sure that the government is alert about the protest & have started surveiling all informations regarding it. So make sure before heading out, you remove all the information or critical informations from your phone that could be used against you, if arrested.

3. Carry a bottle of water. Keep your bagpack light. Only take what’s essential. Sometimes the state targets protestors, so (my personal opinion) it’s smart to wear a mask & cap to protect your identity if you’re there with good intentions. Also, wear full sleeves & a scarf.

4. Don't rely on your phone entirely. Write down emergency contacts in a small notebook/diary. If your phone is lost, snatched or dead, that paper could be helpful. Make sure you lock your phone properly so that they don't leak your information, incase if you lose your phone.

5. If you know the protest area, plan ahead. Identify alternative routes in case of clashes. Never run toward the center or the police. If you spot anyone acting suspicious or police in plain clothes,  it’s safer to keep your distance & avoid interaction!

6. Always look out for the marginalized people in the protest. They are often harassed, beaten or targeted during such events. Solidarity also means looking after one another & protecting the vulnerable from such atrocities.

7. Incase of tear gas, don't rub your eyes or touch your face. Pour water as fast as you can on the affected area. I suggest you to wear glasses, full sleeves or a scarf beforehand to minimize the effect.

8. Protests, no matter how small or peaceful, can escalate quickly. The damage could be fatal. If tension rises, stay calm. Move towards safe routes & avoid the center of the crowd. Don't forget to look after people who are struggling!

Lastly, let’s stay safe while fully standing up for our rights. Take what resonates & leave what doesn’t. I truly hope this protest will be a game changer for Nepal, as we have suffered enough. Also, please don't forget to add additional tips if you know any! 🙏
